Fund-raising For A Research On Women Empowerment In Fish Processing In N’guigueni In Niger Republic

FUND-RAISING FOR A RESEARCH ON WOMEN EMPOWERMENT IN FISH PROCESSING IN N’GUIGUENI IN NIGER REPUBLIC

(LAKE CHAD REGION)

The populations living around the Lake Chad Basin have passed through extremely difficult situations imposed on them by climate change and Boko Haram terrorists who subjected them to terrible hardship which compelled the Government of Niger to impose a state of emergency in the area in 2015.

But in recent years, the successive flooding of the wetlands has considerably increased the Lake’s water level and the long absence of people around the basin has helped in replenishing the quantity of fish therein, including new species.

This made, since 2020, fishing and fish processing activities to be counted among significant sources of income for many women in the region of Diffa, the Niger side of the Lake.

Unfortunately, fishing and fish processing which has the potential to be a pillar of the economy of the region still remain at an artisanal level.  This research focuses on finding ways of equipping women with better tools and knowledge to tap into this sector.

The research objective is to:

  • increase the quantity and the quality of fish processed
  • improve hygiene within and around the processing sites
  • boost the resilience of women against climate change
  • assist women in expanding their markets even outside
