Story

TAKING EDUCATION TO OUT-OF-SCHOOL CHILDREN IN HARD-TO-REACH AREAS IN 7 STATES OF THE NORTHWEST OF NIGERIA

PROBLEM

In October 2022, UNESCO released a shocker by stating that there are 20 million out-of-school children in Nigeria. Over 60% of these children are from the Northern part of the country. Many of these children from families trapped in climate change-induced poverty are withdrawn from school and sent to hock on the street to support their household income; a sizable number of them are from hard-to-reach and inaccessible communities without available schools. Other children are simply discouraged by the decay of the education infrastructure; learner-unfriendly school environments, and poor teacher capacity. These statistics in the 21st century are worrisome and call for quick attention.

SOLUTIONS

They bring education to the Out-of-School-Children, an NGO called Community Aid Connect initiated a Radio School Programme to teach them in Non-Formal Learning Centers in grassroots communities that are completely cut off from the formal way of education. The Radio School Programme offers its beneficiaries access to quality education with Radio as a creative learning platform run by teachers who come from other areas through extremely difficult terrain, using bush paths on quasi-non-existent roads. The program employs 1,480 Teachers in Non-Formal Learning centers (NFLCs) in 56 LGAs across the seven (7) States of North West Nigeria

EXPECTED RESULTS

Despite the difficult implementation of the program due to the difficult environment, it has persuaded local communities to key in and gradually own it. Children are enthusiastic and show great interest in learning though they are highly mobile. From this season they have classrooms and roofed toilets built on a plot of land bought by Community Aid Connect.
